I did think it was a bit suspicious that the likes of Villa, Eto'o etc had no assists early on but I was unable to find any other source to counter the stats ESPN had.

On the statistics they do not, as everyone knows, provide a complete picture. There are so many variables that it's not simply a case of comparing like for like. However by using the broadest possible data I think it provides plenty of information from which to draw certain conclusions. The main point of the article was to show that despite all the attention surrounding Rooney his performances are short of the elite level. I wanted to bring a sense of perspective to the debate about Rooney & show that there are players out there like Villa, Totti that have better records than England's latest world beater.W Gladstonehttps://www.blogger.com/profile/15624663285582832367noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6115745804190775557.post-10837082813166089882010-03-08T16:14:17.856+00:002010-03-08T16:14:17.856+00:00Seems like you got the Spanish league assists data...Seems like you got the Spanish league assists data from ESPN Soccernet. They don't have assists data for the Spanish league from before the 2005-2006 season. And for some players (David Villa), not even from 2005-2006. So for Villa, the assists you have calculated is only from 3 seasons and for Samuel Eto'o, Ronaldinho and most other Spanish league players, 4 seasons.
While for Rooney and other EPL players, it's from over 6 seasons.

The statistics do not give the whole picture e.g Villa topped an assists chart only when he played as a SS and had Fernando Morientes (a former UEFA forward of the year) on his team, not when playing as a CF ,which I assume would be harder, like Thierry Henry did. But Villa's assists reduced when Morientes left. Rooney also had more assists when C. Ronaldo was on his team.

Generally speaking, it's hard to have many assists without having other good strikers on the team and also to score goals without having a good playmaker.
Players who play as a lone striker also generally have more goals.Seannoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6115745804190775557.post-70206398328454633342010-03-02T03:38:13.897+00:002010-03-02T03:38:13.897+00:00Using these stats (if they are correct) for the le...Using these stats (if they are correct) for the league shows this as the actual fair results:
name goals ratio assist ratio Frequency of assist Overal contribution (games ratio - assist frequency)
eto'o 1.43 7.86 0.127226463 1.302773537
henry 1.61 3.6 0.277777778 1.332222222
villa 1.58 7.23 0.138312586 1.441687414
totti 1.67 6.82 0.146627566 1.523372434
messi 1.84 3.79 0.263852243 1.576147757
forlan 1.72 9.65 0.103626943 1.616373057
ronaldo 1.97 4.53 0.220750552 1.749249448
ibra 1.91 7.33 0.136425648 1.773574352
torres 1.95 12.07 0.082850041 1.867149959
rooney 2.13 3.81 0.262467192 1.867532808
drogba 2.11 4.33 0.230946882 1.879053118
ronaldinho 2.29 4.34 0.230414747 2.059585253

This takes into account assist ratios so it's their average contribution. for example eto'o assists in one every 7.86 games (1/7.86 = 0.127) This figure taken away from the goal ratio gives the final, more fairer assessment, of he contributes to a goal every 1.3 games.

Anyway looking at stats and figures only paints half of the picture, you could conversly look at the number of 'winning goals' or 'points won through their goals' and get a completly set of different results. I think for last season berbatov actually gained more 'points' for united than ronaldo did, but that doesn't make him better overall.

To judge rooney on the past 6 seasons is a bit unfair too as even sir alex has said he's been shoe-horned to accomodate ronaldo / the team at times with this season being the first proper run he's had.

I think you'll be hard pressed to find anyone in the world (barring roma fans) who'd take totti over rooney, ronaldo, torres etc. and yet he appears higher in the list than all of these.

As pointed out the other day rooney is now level on goals as ronaldo was at the same stage when he scored 42 goals in all competitions, which is a remarkable feat by any accounts.

Anyway, if anything, all this proves really is there's very little between all of these players in the end.Bobhttp://www.google.comnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6115745804190775557.post-79298290551224634812010-03-01T20:15:08.005+00:002010-03-01T20:15:08.005+00:00Great analysis of statistics but can you go a litt...Great analysis of statistics but can you go a little bit deeper? Maybe a humorous angle on the game, or a piece focusing on one player, or just something outrageously biased? It's difficult to compete with real newspapers on their own turf, they'll generally do a better job and make fewer mistakes (eg Mancini was cup-tied last night).

Good luck.Anonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6115745804190775557.post-30564934066829803172010-02-15T23:57:02.127+00:002010-02-15T23:57:02.127+00:00Thanks for your comments. Though it will be interesting how this relationship goes forward particularly as Brandon Routh is due to stay on the show for several more episodes.

We will be getting a Casey centric episode later on this season so hopefully we will learn more about the Colonel.W Gladstonehttps://www.blogger.com/profile/15624663285582832367noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6115745804190775557.post-46321301981886704622010-02-14T13:34:33.107+00:002010-02-14T13:34:33.107+00:00It could be that Sarah and/or Shaw are 'playin...It could be that Sarah and/or Shaw are 'playing' each other. After all, they are both spies. Wasn't it Sarah/Casey who complained that Shaw was an unknown quantity; he had no official records [at least not ones they could access]?

Chuck believes he's blown it with Sarah [for good reasons]. Why shouldn't he attempt - however badly - to move on?

I agree with your comments about Casey. Adam is weaving a steady seam of [usually comedy] gold through every episode and I watch and listen to him particularly. Casey's the character I want to know more about. How does he cope outside his perceived comfort zone? Does he really have an angry centre? [I'm saying a firm 'no' on that; look at his lusty and romantic tenderness with Ilsa].Anonymousnoreply@blogger.com
